IRVINE, Calif., September 26, 2011 - Kia Motors America, Inc. (KMA) today announced pricing for the all-new and completely redesigned 2012 Rio 5-door subcompact hatchback beginning at an impressive $13,6003 MSRP, while the Rio 5-door A/T starts at $14,7004 – both lower than the previous generation. The top-of-the-line, sporty SX trim starts under $18,0004 and offers a plethora of consumer-friendly and upscale features, including stunning 17-inch alloy wheels and class-exclusive LED headlamp and tail light accents, a sport-tuned suspension with larger front brakes, projection headlamps, twin chrome exhaust tips, fog lamps, as well as standard UVO powered by Microsoft®5 voice-activated infotainment system (expected to be available this fall) with a 4.3-inch color touch screen and rear camera display6.

With an emphasis on being eco-friendly as well as staying on top of cutting-edge technology, the all-new Rio is the first vehicle to offer ISG technology outside of the hybrid and luxury segments, which helps to improve fuel economy by turning the engine off when the vehicle is not in motion – such as at a stop light or in traffic – and automatically restarting when the driver releases the brake pedal (expected to be available at the beginning of 2012). Also, at the end of its lifespan, 85 percent of the Rio's materials are recyclable, including seat foam material that utilizes 100-percent biodegradable and non-toxic castor oil, which benefits the environment in several ways, including reduced use of petroleum-based products.

Unveiled earlier this year at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, the 2012 Rio 5-door offers critically acclaimed exterior and interior styling along with class-leading horsepower and fuel economy. Equipped with a 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine with the option of either a six-speed manual transmission (LX only) or efficient six-speed automatic, the 2012 Rio is one of only two vehicles in the segment to offer a GDI engine, providing an inviting combination of power and fuel efficiency and achieving class-leading 138 horsepower7 while maintaining a class-leading fuel economy rating of 30/40 miles per gallon (mpg) (city/highway)8. With the ISG technology the 2012 Rio will offer consumers an impressive and fuel-sipping 31/40 mpg.

Available in three trims – LX, EX and SX – the 2012 Rio 5-door's exterior design has been completely revamped, offering the same tabbed grille that has become so familiar to the Kia lineup, but slightly slimmed down to connect to the dynamic headlamp design to provide a new twist on the look that includes a bigger air intake to exude a youthful persona. The 2012 Rio also comes better equipped than the previous generation, offering standard air conditioning, electric power steering, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with USB and auxiliary ports, SiriusXM satellite radio with three months complimentary service9, and a slew of standard safety features, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM).

    Design-Led Transformation and Product Line
Kia Motors has undergone a dramatic, design-led transformation, which has been delivering dynamically styled vehicles in several important segments at exactly the right time, contributing to the brand's continued gains in U.S. market share. Kia is poised to continue its momentum and brand growth through design innovation, quality, value, safety features and new technology. Kia's commitment to the U.S. market is represented by its U.S.-based manufacturing facilities in West Point, Georgia – KMMG – which is responsible for the creation of more than 10,000 plant and supplier jobs and added the critically acclaimed Optima midsize sedan10 to its production line in September. Kia's model year 2012 vehicle line includes the Sorento CUV, Sportage compact CUV, Optima midsize sedan, Optima Hybrid, Soul urban passenger vehicle, Forte compact sedan, Forte 5-door compact hatchback, Forte Koup two-door coupe, all-new Rio and Rio 5-door sub-compacts and Sedona minivan.

Kia GT Concept Will Enter Production in 2013

Kia usually makes a concept vehicle not with a full production ambition at hand like MINI, but with the distinct possibility if the public response to something is good enough.

One such project is the GT Concept that made its debut in Frankfurt, which despite not having a really cool name or a hefty price tag managed to get all the underdog lovers to rally to its cause.

According to an Autocar report, Kia will indeed put the four-door coupe into production and it will hit the European market some time in 2013. We believe this is to be Kia’s halo car for coming years, and it can’t bring it to the market fast enough.

As a reminder, the GT Concept is powered by a new 3.3-liter V6 engine that delivers 390 horsepower to the rear wheels. The body is more akin to the Aston Martin Rapide than to four-door coupes like the Passat CC.

Kia Optima Sets Guinness Record for Fuel Economy

Kia Motors Corp. says two drivers set a new Guinness World Record the lowest fuel consumption in a hybrid gasoline vehicle, while driving a 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid sedan through the 48 contiguous states.

Wayne Gerdes from Wadsworth, Ill., and Chris Bernius from New York drove the factory-standard car 7,899 miles while recording an average fuel economy of 64.55 miles per gallon. The result beat the car’s official EPA highway fuel-economy rating by 61%. The result in part shows that drivers can often boost their vehicles’ fuel economy by adjusting their driving habits and using certain techniques to stretch the fuel supply.

“While traveling across the United States the Optima Hybrid experienced temperatures ranging from more than 118 degrees Fahrenheit to less than freezing point. The team climbed through the formidable Rocky mountain chain and negotiated rush hour traffic in Chicago, New York City and Las Vegas – which makes the Optima Hybrid’s fuel consumption figure all the more impressive,” said Kia’s senior executive vice president and chief operating officer Thomas Oh.

The trip took 14 days with an average of 564 miles driven per day. The Optima hybrid used just over 5.5 tanks of gasoline on the route and traveled an average of 1,418 miles between fill-ups. To comply with Guinness World Record guidelines, the Optima Hybrid had to carry two people and their luggage throughout the drive.

The record set is officially titled “Lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous U.S. states in a gasoline hybrid car,” which is a new category created by Guinness World Records.

Kia Motors America Announces 12th Consecutive Monthly Sales Record

Year-to-Date Sales up 39.4 Percent and on Pace to Surpass Kia's All-Time Best U.S. Annual Sales Total in Less Than Nine Months

    2011-09-01_1114

IRVINE, Calif., September 1, 2011 - Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced best-ever August sales of 41,188 units, a 26.9-percent increase over the same period last year and the company's 12th straight monthly sales record. Kia's design-led transformation has led to unprecedented growth, and with year-to-date sales up 39.4 percent, KMA is on pace to shatter its previous best-ever annual sales total in September.

August sales were once again led by the U.S.-built1 Sorento CUV, which posted its all-time best sales – 13,573 units – for the second-consecutive month. The critically acclaimed Optima midsize sedan also was a strong performer – 6,157 units – on the eve of the start of U.S. production at Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG). The popularity of the funky Soul urban passenger vehicle and Forte compacts also fueled the August sales record.

"Kia has achieved new sales records each month for a full year and has become one of the fastest growing car companies in the U.S. due to significant increases in consumer awareness, perception and consideration of the brand created by our diverse and exciting lineup of cars and CUVs," said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and KMMG. "Last year, Kia surpassed sales of 350,000 vehicles for the first time and we will break that record in less than nine months and continue expanding our market share by offering vehicles such as the recently launched Optima Hybrid and the upcoming Rio 5-door, which begins arriving in dealerships in September. Both vehicles greatly appeal to today's consumer by achieving 40 miles per gallon and offer an unbeatable combination of style, technology, performance, safety and value."
